For centuries Dubrovnik was an autonomous and powerful republic, known as the Republic of Ragusa. The Republic was remarkably ahead of its time: the first pharmacy opened in 1317, slave trading was abolished in 1418, and an orphanage was founded in 1432. The gargantuan walls enclose the Old Town, but the strength of Dubrovnik never lay in its military architecture and might, but always in its political and diplomatic acumen.
